Colm Blackburn from Dublin has been selected as the Dunlop Young Racing Driver of the Month for July, for his performances in the Formula Vee class.
At Mondello Park on July 6, he won the first of the Formula Vee Championship races and went on to take fourth place in the Final. The following day, in the Vee Festival, he finished fifth in his heat, second in his semi-final, and fifth in the Festival Final, the most important race of the year for this well supported class, behind four much more experienced drivers.
With victories earlier this year at both Kirkistown and Mondello Park, the 23 year-old Ballyfermot driver currently holds second place in the Dunlop class Championship, a single point behind the leader. He is also in seventh position in the Crowne Plaza Dundalk Championship, where he is up against all the established Vee aces.
Colm started racing midway through the 2011 season, and in his first full year in 2012, he won the Formula Vee Novice Championship. This year, he is delighted to have the support of Paul Heavey, the constructor of Leastone cars, with sponsorship from Total Oils, Stena Line and Dunlop.
Having been selected as the fourth Dunlop Driver of the Month for the 2013 season, Colm, a student at Pearse College in Dublin, is now a contender for the prestigious Dunlop Motorsport Ireland Young Racing Driver of the Year Award and the historic Sexton Trophy. This award is presented annually and is supported by Dunlop, the Irish Sports Council and Motorsport Ireland.
