Rounds 9 and 10 of the Crowne Plaza National Formula Vee Championship at Mondello Park International were always going to be about championship contenders Adam Macaulay and Ray Moore but it was Trevor Delaney who stole the spoils in qualifying with a blistering lap to put him on pole by 0.8secs from Macaulay with Moore in third.

Moore pulled his Bernard Dolan run Leastone into pitlane on the warm up lap of Round 9 and with it all realistic hopes of another championship were over. As he’s done all season, Macaulay got a great start to take the lead from Delaney and Jimmy Furlong. Delaney, one of the best overtakers at the Kildare track, hassled Macaulay at each corner until he eventually made a mistake which let the Delaney Sheane through into the lead. Macaulay returned the favour until Delaney spun while on the brakes on the last lap. Another win for Macaulay with Jimmy Furlong getting his Sheane into second with the recovering Delaney in third.

Behind the lead trio, Stephen Morrin had his best race to date with a great drive to fourth followed by the charging Kevin Grogan in his AvantiSport Leastone after qualifying problems saw him start at the back of the grid. Regular front runner Dan Polley completed the top six after engine gremlins haunted his LOH Sheane.

Macaulay needed a top four finishing position for Round 10 to take the championship but the Wicklow man confirmed before the race that he was aiming for another victory and wouldn’t be taking it easy. His customary great start saw him lead by over four seconds at the end of the first lap from Delaney and Moore. Once Moore got past Delaney on lap 3, he reeled off a string of fast laps to catch and pass Macaulay on the tricky wet track. A win for Moore followed up by Macaulay, Delaney and Polley ensured that Adam Macaulay is the 2013 Crowne Plaza National Formula Vee Champion.

Speaking after his championship victory, Macaulay said “I’ve come a long way this year from a disastrous 2012 season. Getting my first win early in the season gave me a lot of confidence in myself and with help from Newsome Racing, I knew my car would always be capable of more wins. I just want to win races and can’t wait to get to Kirkistown for the final round”.

The Saturday B/C race saw Stephen Morrin take a commanding win from Colm Blackburn with rookie Justin Costello having his best race of the season to take the bottom step on the podium. The battle for third had been a four way race long battle between Costello, Damian Murphy, 16 year old Jack Byrne and Morgan McCourt.

After Rounds 9 and 10, Macaulay cannot be caught at the top of the Crowne Plaza National Championship. Ray Moore remains in second with Dan Polley 15 points behind in third. With Moore not racing in the final round and 20 points on offer, Polley will be aiming to leapfrog Moore for second. Colm Blackburn leads Stephen Morrin by 8 points at the top of the Dunlop Championship with Morgan McCourt only 1 point behind in third. In the VW Spares Rookie Championship, young Jack Byrne leads Justin Costello by just 1 point. The final round at Kirkistown should see fireworks while each championship is sorted out.

Star Drive – Kevin Grogan. An engine issue in qualifying left him at the back of the grid for each race. He got the head down as the lights went out for each race and finished with a P5, DNF while running in the top 5 and a P3 in the non-championship Emerson Fittipaldi Trophy race. If he drives like that at the final round in Kirkistown, he’ll be one to watch for his maiden win.

Round 9:
Total Oils Fastest Lap Award – Trevor Delaney.
AvantiSport Highest Grid Mover – Kevin Grogan.

Round 10:
Total Oils Fastest Lap Award – Ray Moore.
AvantiSport Highest Grid Mover – Jack Byrne.
